The University of Adelaide Maths Learning Centre and the Adelaide University Maths Students (AUMS) club will host a Celebration of Mind BBQ and games session for University of Adelaide staff and students.

Open for all math enthusiasts 18 years of age or older.

MathsJam Mumbai celebrates Martin Gardner over a coffee

MathsJams meet at 7:00 on the second-last Tuesday of the month for an informal sharing of puzzles and games.

Each month one group contributes a page of activities, and in October the theme will be Martin Gardner.

If you plan to attend the Sydney MathsJam your MUST RSVP the convener so a big enough table can be booked. Please bring enough cash for your meal ($25-$30) as Cafe Gioia does not let patrons split bills.

Please put the following event on your website map. At our Oct. 20thMartin Gardner celebration at Butler University (9:30am-12nn) room 183 Jordan Hall, we will start with a brief demonstration of the 12 Scientific American covers inspired by Gardner’s column. A cake will have the first cover (November 1958) printed in frosting on it ( a square divided into smaller squares).
I will also hand out a Puzzle and Game of size 4×4 inspired by the November 1959 (the second cover) issue on Euler Latin squares. (see attached)
We then expect the students in our M. Gardner class to present their own puzzles and games all with a Gardner theme.

Our 37th annual computer graphics film show features the latest and greatest computer animations, direct from the ACM SIGGRAPH conference held this past summer in Anaheim. Our speaker this year is Szymon Rudenkiewicz of Princeton University. We will be co-celebrating Martin Gardner’s 102nd birthday by hosting a Celebration of Mind party as part of our meeting. As part of Maths Week Ireland 2016, we are joining with the National Botanic Gardens , Dublin Halloween festival for a Celebration of Mind event. There will be games, puzzles , building giant balloon mathematical structures- something for all the family

Mark Mitton is a professional magician who is fascinated by using magic to better understand how we see the world. In addition to performing at private and corporate events all over the world, and creating magic for film, television, the Broadway stage, and Cirque du Soleil, Mark tirelessly explores the theme of Misdirection’ from an interdisciplinary standpoint. He regularly presents on Perception’ at universities and conferences in North America and Europe, including the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness, and has lectured with the late Nobel laureate Dr. Gerald Edelman of The Neurosciences Institute.
Mark was the apprentice to legendary sleight-of-hand master and vaudevillian Slydini, and a long-time student of Ozzie Malini the son of turn-of-the-century magician Max Malini. He has performed for Mick Jagger, Beyonce, Jay-Z, John Mayer, Katy Perry, Salman Rushdie, Sienna Miller, Mark Messier, Sting, Sylvester Stallone, and many others; at festivals in Europe and Asia; at the Olympic Games; in war-torn Liberia; in hospital wards around New York City; and in a Mexican orphanage with members of the band Guster. His magical hands are featured in a They Might Be Giants video, and he appears in Tony Oursler’s latest video project Imponderable’, in which he plays both Oursler’s grandfather Fulton Oursler and Harry Houdini. Cliff Stoll: Familiar to many East Bay residents, Cliff Stoll can be found engaging withmath lovers of all ages with his http://www.kleinbottle.com, manyappearances on YouTube’s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAsICMPwGPY) channel, and his boundless energy to share his passion for math and science with the world.
Peace Comes to the Unusual Kingdoms: Many people are familiar with “Peter and the Wolf”, the musical symphony written in 1936 by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev to invite children to learn more about orchestras.
In the same spirit, MSRI trustee Jeff Goodby has teamed with composer Jack Perla to write “Peace Comes to theUnusual Kingdoms”, a new children’s musicalsymphony that explores the connections between music and math! It will have its world premiere later this month by the Oakland Symphony, led by another MSRI Trustee, Maestro Michael Morgan.

Hands-On Math Activities:From mathematical balloon builds to paper crafts and puzzles, there’s lots to try and enjoy for kids and families. Parking ; Transportation
Parking is free on weekendsin the “MSRI Only Parking”lot level above the Lawrence Hall of Science parking lots(enter from Cenntential Drive), as well as around the Silver Space Sciences Laboratory buildings above MSRI.Overflow parking is available in the Lawrence Hall of Science parking lots.A very limited number of handicapped parking spaces are available at the entrance to MSRI.
To reach MSRI by public transit, take the AC Transit http://www.actransit.org//srv/htdocs/wp-content/uploads/65_timetable.pdf, 65 Euclid/Lawrence Hall of Science bus route to the Lawrence Hall of Science, and use the parking lot stairs to reach MSRI.

We’re planning this year’s Gathering for Gardner dinner for Sunday, October 23rd, starting at 5:00pm. It will be in lower Manhattan. If you are interested in attending, please email bvk@pobox.com

The main subject this year is “knots”. In particular: the ’rational tangles dance’
invented by J.H. Conway. In addition there will be many puzzles (mechanical, geometric,
illusions, tricks).

The Israeli Celebration of Mind will take place at the Davidson Institute of Science Education on the premises of the Weizmann Institute of Science. Recreational math, puzzles and games enthusiasts are invited to an informal meeting with lots of puzzles, a lecture on Martin Gardner and his legacy, and the famous ’ 2 minute puzzle competition’.

The Psi Chi Honors Society and the Department of Psychological Science are pleased to present the second annual Martin Gardner Celebration of Mind at Carthage.
The event will begin with brief presentations on topics related to Martin Gardner’s interests. This year’s speakers will include:
Anthony Barnhart (Department of Psychological Science), speaking on the magic of Martin Gardner.
Erlan Wheeler (Department of Mathematics and Computer Science), speaking on Magic Squares and the Fourth Dimension
A special, digital visit from James The Amazing Randi, who will discuss his relationship with Martin Gardner.
Following the presentations, attendees will be encouraged to enjoy some refreshments and interact with hands-on displays featuring illusions, recreational mathematics, magic, puzzles, and more!
