ABOUT THE ARTWORK
ENTERTAINMENT
MAGIC – Matt Baker is an internationally renowned Georgia Tech mathematics professor by day and an accomplished magician by night. He has published three math books and over fifty research articles, and has won numerous awards for his teaching. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and a two-time recipient of a Simons Fellowship in Mathematics. In his life as a magician, Matt has also met with acclaim. A protegé of the late, great Simon Aronson, Matt is a two-time winner of the Greater Atlanta Magician of the Year award. His first book on magic, The Buena Vista Shuffle Club, was published in April 2019 to rave reviews and is now in its third printing. Matt has performed three times at the invitation-only Fechter’s Finger Flicking Frolic, the world’s premier close-up magic convention. He was the instructor for Vanishing Inc’s acclaimed “Masterclass” series in September 2022, and in 2023 he appeared on the hit television show Penn & Teller: Fool Us.
MATH COMEDY – Dr. Lew Lefton is a member of the mathematics faculty at Georgia Tech. He is semi-retired from his recent roles of Assistant Dean of Information Technology and Associate Vice President of Research Computing. But Lefton is not your ordinary geek! He’s also an accomplished and experienced comedian who has performed stand up and improv comedy all over the country for decades. Perhaps Lefton’s unique talents are best summed up by his business card which reads:
Lew Lefton
Mathematician / Stand Up Comic
“He’s funny and he can prove it”
MUSIC – Tracy Kathleen Woodard has been active in the Atlanta scene since 1999. She sat on the board of directors for Eyedrum Gallery for many years, founded the Cantos Y Cuentos contemporary string quartet, is President of Mad Housers Inc., works for Intown Cares as program manager, and founded the Atlanta Contemporary Ensemble. She programmed the silent film series “Signal and the Noise,” the “Language of Birds” science and music series, and continues to push for innovative combinations of live music with dance, art, science, and film in evocative spaces.
