The Carthage College Psi Chi Honors Society and the Department of Psychological Science are pleased to present the 3rd annual Martin Gardner Celebration of Mind at Carthage.
Every year in late October, people around the world gather to honor the legacy of magician, mathematician, skeptic, puzzler, Lewis Carroll scholar, and science writer, Martin Gardner. This year’s Celebration of Mind will explore Spooky Science ; Skepticism, using magic, puzzles, and games to delight, instruct, and bring people together in a spirit of fun.
The event will begin with brief presentations on topics related to Martin Gardner’s spooky interests. This year’s speakers will include:
Magician, Peter Boie, discussing a skeptic’s perspective on seance magic.
Dr. Sara Jensen (Department of Mathematics), presenting mysterious mathematics.
Dr. Anthony Barnhart (Department of Psychological Science), speaking on the lurid history of research in parapsychology.
Jeff Wagg, curator of the College of Curiosity.
Following the presentations, attendees will be encouraged to enjoy some refreshments and interact with hands-on displays featuring illusions, recreational mathematics, magic, puzzles, and more. Afterwards, head over to the Student Union Auditorium to enjoy Peter Boie’s Summoning Spirits show!
