Event Details

Join us at the Koshland Science Museum for an evening of magic and math as we host our very first Celebration of Mind event! Get in touch with your inner mathemagician as you watch Colm Mulcahy’s card tricks, learn the math that makes them work, and even try them yourself. This event will also highlight the amazing legacy of writer Martin Gardner, “The Best Friend Mathematics Ever Had,” in whose honor Celebrations of Mind are held worldwide every October.
Colm Mulcahy is professor of mathematics at Spelman College, in Atlanta, where he has taught since 1988. He trained in algebra, and has also written papers on CAGC and wavelets. Since 2000, he has been at the forefront of publishing original “mathemagical” principles and effects, particularly in his long-running bi-monthly blog, Card Colm, for the Mathematical Association of America. Dr. Mulcahy is particularly active in Gathering for Gardner and the associated Celebration of Mind initiative and was fortunate to know Martin Gardner for the last ten years of his life. He is author of the book Mathematical Card Magic: Fifty-Two New Effects, blogs occasionally for Huffington Post and Scientific American, and has had his puzzles published online by the New York Times. Dr. Mulcahy earned a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in mathematical science from University College Dublin, in his native Ireland, and a Ph.D. from Cornell University for research in the abstract algebraic theory of quadratic forms.
Admission is $10 ($7 for students) and includes complimentary refreshments.
