John Buridan’s self-referential paradoxes

The name of the fourteenth-century philosopher John Buridan is associated with the hypothetical ass which starved to death because it could not choose between two equally attractive bales of hay.  This talk will relate colourful legends about Buridan’s life, and will mention some of his other mathematical ideas, but will focus on his remarkable analysis of self-referential paradoxe

Tony Mann teaches at the University of Greenwich.  He has written about the history of mathematics, and recently edited with Raymond Flood and Mary Croarken “Mathematics at the Meridian: the History of Mathematics at Greenwich” (CRC Press, 2020).  His other interests include diversity and inclusion in mathematics, recreational mathematics, puzzles and  mathematical magic.
