Planet Smullyan
Raymond Merrill Smullyan (1919-2017) was an American mathematician, magician, pianist, logician, Taoist, philosopher, and amateur astronomer.
He was a brilliant logician, having significantly contributed for a better understanding of Gödel’s theorem. Smullyan, a close friend of Martin Gardner, was one of the most relevant recreational mathematicians that ever lived, having published many masterpieces on recreational logic. Books like «What is the name of this book?», «The chess mysteries of the Arabian knights», and «The riddle of Scheherazade» are pearls in this field. The Island of Knights and Knaves and chessboards where detectives and kings solve problems using retrograde analysis are two magic realms of pure creativity. In this talk, we will  show some examples of his outstanding recreational work.
Carlos Pereira dos Santos is a Professor at the Higher Institute of  Engineering of Lisbon. He received a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. His main research topic is Combinatorial Game Theory. He is interested in Recreational Mathematics,  having been vice-president of the Ludus Association. Also, He is interested in Mathematics Education, being an enthusiast of Singapore Math. Regarding hobbies, he is an International Chess Master.
