Friday News Nov 24: Weekly Socials, G4G Tributes

  • G4G Weekly Socials

Our weekly Socials are held on Sunday at 12 noon Atlanta time (check the time for you here).

We are using the Zoom Meeting platform here (not Zoom Webinar as we do for our monthly CoM presentations on the 21st). So for these Sundays socials we will all be able to see each other.

    Upcoming Sessions:

Sun 26 Nov – Nancy Blachman will lead the discussion on “Broadening the diversity of G4G”

You are invited this Sunday to participate in a discussion of ideas for broadening the diversity of G4G.

Thanks to generous donations from the Simons Foundation, Bill Ritchie, and Andrea Barthello, G4G is pleased to announce the return of our Scholarship Program, which will provide financial assistance to help individuals attending the 15th Gathering 4 Gardner conference. (Please Note: Scholarships are for adults ages 18 and above.) These scholarships are intended to help broaden the diversity of G4G.

We are seeking applicants who show strong interest in the interdisciplinary aspects of Martin Gardner’s legacy (math, magic, puzzles, science, skepticism, literature) and whose unique backgrounds and perspectives will enrich our community. We especially encourage people in the following groups to apply:

    • Women
    • Young adults (ages 18+)
    • People in other underrepresented groups
    • People with special circumstances who require financial support to attend.

      Due date – December 6, 2023

We hope you’ll be able to join us on Sunday.
We welcome theme suggestions for the G4G Weekend Socials. Would YOU like to lead such a social, perhaps with a fresh look at a favorite Martin Gardner column (or book)? All information can be found here.
  • November Virtual Celebration of Mind (CoM)

This Tuesday November 21, at 12 noon ET (16:00 UTC) Atlanta Local Time, we return for another Virtual Celebration of mind. The title of this month’s presentation is “The maths of simple two-player games” by Peter Rowlett. This presentation will happen on Zoom Webinar. We’ll also meet in another Zoom Room, where everyone will be able to see each other, right after this presentation.

  • G4G Community

We are excited to announce that Matt Baker, long time G4G community member will be appearing on the television show Penn & Teller: Fool Us! The show will air Friday evening 12/1 on the CW network, and then will be available to stream on the CW website starting Dec. 2. More here.

  • G4G Tributes

We continue to update and maintain multiple tribute pages. In this we hope to honour and remember the many who have made the G4G community the remarkable group it is. As well as to inspire and connect those who build on the shoulders of these giants. We welcome and encourage any contribution to these tributes. To share your memories or anecdotes, please email us, support@g4gfoundation.org
