Friday News Mar 29: Weekly Socials, G4G Tributes

  • G4G Weekly Socials

Our weekly Socials are held on Sunday at 1 pm Atlanta time (check the time for you here).

We are using the Zoom Meeting platform here (not Zoom Webinar as we do for our monthly CoM presentations on the 21st). So for these Sundays socials we will all be able to see each other.

    Upcoming Sessions:

Sun 31 Mar – Scott Kim with “If math is a game, how do you play?”

We welcome theme suggestions for the G4G Weekend Socials. Would YOU like to lead such a social, perhaps with a fresh look at a favorite Martin Gardner column (or book)? All information can be found here.
  • Sunday Social, 31 March, 2024 If math is a game, how do you play?

In this talk I’m going to explore how we can involve kids in a better way of playing the game of mathematics. In school most kids learn that doing math consists of learning facts and procedures. You win by answering questions correctly, within time limits. It’s an anxious and uncreative game.

Mathematicians, of course, play mathematics very differently. If you’re doing original mathematics you participate by asking questions and trying things out, and sometimes making new discoveries. Puzzle lovers get in a groove of solving puzzles, and getting better and better at that skill.

So how do you play math? What groove do you like to get into? Let’s discuss.
  • G4G Tributes

We continue to update and maintain multiple tribute pages. In this we hope to honour and remember the many who have made the G4G community the remarkable group it is. As well as to inspire and connect those who build on the shoulders of these giants. We welcome and encourage any contribution to these tributes. To share your memories or anecdotes, please email us, support@g4gfoundation.org
