Friday News Oct 18: Weekly Socials, G4G15 Videos, G4GEurope, Tributes

  • G4G Weekly Socials

Our weekly Socials are held on Sunday at 1 pm Atlanta time (check the time for you here).

We are using the Zoom Meeting platform here (not Zoom Webinar as we do for our monthly CoM presentations on the 21st). So for these Sundays socials we will all be able to see each other.

    Upcoming Sessions:

Sun 20 Oct – John Miller and Arthur O’Dwyer will offer further musings on indexing Martin Gardner columns
    Sun 27 Oct – TBA

We welcome theme suggestions for the G4G Weekend Socials. Would you like to lead such a social, perhaps with a fresh look at a favorite Martin Gardner column (or book)? A magic effect you invented? A miscellaneous theme? Please contact us.

All information can be found here.

  • Sunday 20 October Social, “Further musings on indexing Martin Gardner columns”

On September 15, John Miller reflected on the evolution of his index of Mathematical Games.  Since the talk, Arthur O’Dwyer added JSTOR entries to the index, so we can now click to (pre)view any month’s Column!!

This Sunday, October 20, we will revisit the Mathematical Games index.
What are any thoughts on an alternate format for the index – biblio format rather than table format?
What format could be mobile friendly? Is that needed?
Any ideas for an “ideal” index?  What more could be included, short of cross-referencing all the books.
Would having columns grouped by “topic” be useful?  Someone needs to declare additional official topic codes as some months are uncoded.

See the index itself for more about JSTOR:

John improved the look of the above index, and put his 9/15 notes on another page:

  • October Virtual Celebration of Mind

This Monday October 21, at 12 noon ET (16:00 UTC) Atlanta Local Time, we return for another Virtual Celebration of mind. The title of this month’s presentation is “The Martin Gardner Papers at Stanford” by Stan Isaacs. This presentation will happen on Zoom Webinar. We’ll also meet in another Zoom Room, where everyone will be able to see each other, right after this presentation.

  • G4G15 Videos

As for past G4Gn videos of the flash talks presented at the Gathering will be shared publicly on the web. We are uploading new videos weekly to our YouTube channel. You can find the latest videos here.

  • G4G Tributes

It is with pleasure that we get to announce that Colm Mulcahy was given the Maths Week Ireland Award for outstanding work in raising public awareness of mathematics on Thursday, Oct 17,  2024.

We continue to update and maintain multiple tribute pages. In this we hope to honour and remember the many who have made the G4G community the remarkable group it is. As well as to inspire and connect those who build on the shoulders of these giants. We welcome and encourage any contribution to these tributes. To share your memories or anecdotes, please email us, support@g4gfoundation.org
