Friday News Dec 20: Weekly Socials, December CoM, G4G15 Videos

  • G4G Weekly Socials

Our weekly Socials are held on Sunday at 1 pm Atlanta time (check the time for you here).

We are using the Zoom Meeting platform here (not Zoom Webinar as we do for our monthly CoM presentations on the 21st). So for these Sundays socials we will all be able to see each other.

    Upcoming Sessions:

Sun 22 Dec – Big News
    Sun 29 Dec – TBA

We welcome theme suggestions for the G4G Weekend Socials. Would you like to lead such a social, perhaps with a fresh look at a favorite Martin Gardner column (or book)? A magic effect you invented? A miscellaneous theme? Please contact us.

All information can be found here.

  • Sunday Social, Dec 22, Big News

    Three big news items:

    1. Starting in January, the Sunday socials will switch back to Saturdays, at the same time!

    2. We will take a break from the conjuring theme for the second weekend social of the month.

    2. Instead, we will try to address the question What Would Martin Gardner Do?

In an age of increasing misformation and uncritical acceptance of propaganda, Martin would be appalled at the lack of basic thinking skills.  Starting in January, we at G4G should start productive discussions about this on the second Saturday.  Preferably without descending into 1. mere Trump bashing, 2. Social media bashing, or 3. Hand-wringing over “the youth of today”!

Maybe people could take turns surveying some of MGs exemplary writings on rationality over a 60 year period!
Let’s start discussing this proposal this Sunday at 1pm ET (Atlanta time)
  • December Virtual Celebration of Mind (CoM)

Tomorrow, Saturday, December 21, at 12 noon ET, Atlanta Local Time, we return for another Virtual Celebration of mind. The title of this month’s presentation is “The Math Puzzle that Spawned 100 Philosophy Papers by Peter Winkler. This presentation will happen on Zoom Webinar. We’ll also meet in another Zoom Room, where everyone will be able to see each other, right after this presentation.

  • G4G15 Videos

As for past G4Gn videos of the flash talks presented at the Gathering will be shared publicly on the web. We are uploading new videos weekly to our YouTube channel. You can find the latest videos here.

  • G4G Tributes

It is with sadness that G4G notes the passing of long time G4G community member Adam Atkinson on Dec 8, 2024.

We continue to update and maintain multiple tribute pages. In this we hope to honour and remember the many who have made the G4G community the remarkable group it is. As well as to inspire and connect those who build on the shoulders of these giants. We welcome and encourage any contribution to these tributes. To share your memories or anecdotes, please email us, support@g4gfoundation.org
