Friday News Aug 01: Weekly Socials, Virtual CoMs

  • G4G Weekly Socials

Our weekly Socials are held on Saturday at 1 pm Atlanta time (check the time for you here).

We are using the Zoom Meeting platform here (not Zoom Webinar as we do for our monthly CoM presentations on the 21st). So for these Saturday socials we will all be able to see each other.

    Upcoming Sessions:

Sat 02 Aug – Scott Kim with “7 WAYS TO USE PUZZLES IN MATH EDUCATION”

Continuing my series on the Art of Puzzle Design, I'm presenting a spectrum of ways to use puzzles in math education, ranging from a supplementary role to a central role. The key insight is that playing mathematical puzzles in math class is analogous to reading fiction in English class — it can play a central role that complements the more fragmented grammar-focused way of learning language or math.

Sat 09 Aug – “What would Martin Gardner Do?”
Sat 16 Aug – “Rediscovering Martin Gardner’s Mathematical Games column from Scientific American”
    Sat 23 Aug – TBD
    Sat 30 Aug – TBD

We welcome theme suggestions for the G4G Weekend Socials. Would you like to lead such a social, perhaps with a fresh look at a favorite Martin Gardner column (or book)? A  piece on critical thinking? A miscellaneous theme? Please contact us.

All information can be found here.

  • Virtual Celebration of Mind

We continue our series of online seminars, Virtual Celebration of Mind, that started in 2020. The sessions are at 12 noon Atlanta time (check your time here) held on zoom webinar, here.

Our upcoming speakers for the Virtual Celebration of Mind Webinars happening on the 21st of every month is:

    – Aug 21, Tatyana Khodorovskiy and David Plaxco
  • G4G15 Videos

As for past G4Gn videos of the flash talks presented at the Gathering will be shared publicly on the web. We are uploading new videos weekly to our YouTube channel. You can find the latest videos here.

  • G4G Tributes

It is with sadness that G4G notes the passing of long time G4G community member Adam Atkinson on Dec 8, 2024.

We continue to update and maintain multiple tribute pages. In this we hope to honour and remember the many who have made the G4G community the remarkable group it is. As well as to inspire and connect those who build on the shoulders of these giants. We welcome and encourage any contribution to these tributes. To share your memories or anecdotes, please email us, support@g4gfoundation.org
