The Department of Mathematical Sciences is, once again, hosting Celebration of Mind (CoM), an annual world wide event promoting the fun and beautiful side of Mathematics. CoM will provide a host of different booths where children and adults of all ages can see practical, live demonstrations of how math comes up in the real world – and just how amazing it all is!
The event will be held in the forth floor of Champions Hall on March 31st from 10:00am – 2:00pm.
The best way to get to the fourth floor would be to take the stairs on the north-facing, right side of the building; however, elevator access is available on the third floor near the south end of the building.
This event (in-tandem with others around the world) is dedicated to Martin Gardner who, as a mathmagician, strove to make math more approachable and engaging.

HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES (1st and 2nd floors)
1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Hands-On Math Activities and Displays
California Mathematics Festival: Join us for a hands-on problem-solving fair, California Mathematics Festival style! Everybody in your family from grandma to little brother can experience a dozen exciting math activities. You don’t have to watch; you’ll find problems you can do! Come have fun doing math with your whole family.
Elwyn and Jennifer Berlekamp Foundation:Try to trap your opponent inthe Game of Amazons; learn the trick of winning at perennial favorite Dots and Boxes; and get caught in a loop with Moebius Paper Crafts
Glen Whitney:Join National Museum of Mathematics co-founder and mathematical artist Glen Whitney for a giant group sculpture build of adual helix that with your help will grow to be three stories tall!
Dr. Carlo Sequin(UC Berkeley):”Soap Films Suspended on Knots” Models ; DemonstrationsFollowing Dr. Sequin’s stage talk of the same title (see below), he will share a display ofvarious interlinked loops and knots in the form of plastic models made on inexpensive 3D-printers,with the challenge to identify the knots that were used to form these surfaces.
Dr. Henry Segerman(Oklahoma State University): Mathematical 3-D Printed Objects to ExploreFollowing Dr. Segerman’s stage talk on hyperbolic honeycombs, you can join him to explore his mathematical 3D-printed objects. Dr. Segerman has been regularly featured on Numberphile and his mathematical objects are fun for all ages!
MSRI:MSRI staff will host hands-on math activities for ages 8 to adult around Chern Hall, including aZometool bubble station, mathematical coloring corner, and more!
Mathical Reading Nook:Curl up with a good book in the Hearst Library and explore 50+ titles that have won theMathical Book Prizefor ages 2-18!
STAGE SHOWS IN SIMONS AUDITORIUM (1st floor)
These short presentations will knock your socks off!(The final presentation schedule will be announced in early October.) VISUALIZING HYPERBOLIC HONEYCOMBS(Interactive Presentation) Dr. Henry Segerman(Oklahoma State University) We can describe any of the five platonic solids with only two numbers: the number, p, of sides on each face, and the number, q, of those faces that meet at each vertex. The pair {p,q} is called the Schl√§fli symbol for the polyhedron. By changing p and q, we can also describe regular tilings of the euclidean and hyperbolic planes, and by extending to three numbers, {p,q,r}, we can describe regular tilings of three-dimensional spaces. I’ll talk about a project Roice Nelson and I worked on, trying to draw some sort of picture of every length-three Schl√§fli symbol, from {3,3,3} to {‚àû,‚àû,‚àû}. WELCOME TO NUMBERPHILE Brady Haran (Journalist and Filmmaker) Meet Brady Haran of YouTube’sNumberphilechannel! SOAP FILMS SUSPENDED ON KNOTS(Interactive Presentation) Dr. Carlo Sequin(UC Berkeley) Suppose you dip a wire model of a mathematical knot, such as a trefoil of a Figure-8 knot, into a soap solution what kind of surface would the soap film form? Results will be shown for various interlinked loops and knots in the form of plastic models made on inexpensive 3D-printers.The talk will be followed by a display of many such models, with the challenge to identify the knots that were used to form these surfaces. MATH ; MAGIC(Interactive Presentation) Mark Mitton Mark Mittonis a professional magician who is fascinated by using magic to better understand how we see the world. In addition to performing at private and corporate events all over the world, and creating magic for film, television, the Broadway stage, and Cirque du Soleil, Mitton tirelessly explores the theme of Misdirection’ from an interdisciplinary standpoint. He regularly presents on Perception’ at universities and conferences in North America and Europe, including the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness, and has lectured with the late Nobel laureate Dr. Gerald Edelman of The Neurosciences Institute.Mitton has performed at festivals in Europe and Asia; at the Olympic Games; in war-torn Liberia; in hospital wards around New York City; and in a Mexican orphanage. His magical hands are featured in aThey Might Be Giants video.

As Celebration of Mind, a group of events that hone the spirit and work of Martin Gardner by promoting the pleasure to think, we’ll once again have a Puzzle and Problem Video Network Competition. What is a Puzzle and Problem Video Network Competition? Well basically it will be a google hangout were various groups get together from different places and challenge each other with brain teasers. Is it very competitive? We are still arguing who won in 2014. Of all participants Israel and Lisbonwere clearly victors of the outcome (chance has it that these were the only participants, but that is secondary)
Any small group is welcome to join (Note: a single person is considered a group, but zero or negative number of people will be excluded).
We’ll be joining live from various places on the globe meeting up at around 21:00 (GMT +3). That is 19:00 (GMT +1) in London and Lisbon; 20:00 (GMT +2) Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Rome, … well central Europe. For other places it might not be exactly prime time, but we would be happy to have anyone join. If the times confuses you, this might very well be the very first problem.
We encourage to prepare and share problems that are easy to convey and pose a challenge (but are within capabilities of solution) for everyone.
I think I set up a hangouts that should work here:

This year’s Celebration of Mind will explore Mathemagics!, using magic, puzzles, and games to delight, instruct, and bring people together in a spirit of fun.
The event will begin with brief presentations on topics related to Martin Gardner’s interests in magic and recreational mathematics. This year’s speakers will include:
Dr. Sara Jensen (Department of Mathematics), presenting mysterious mathematics.
Dr. Anthony Barnhart (Department of Psychological Science), speaking on the psychological basis of mathematical magic.
Following the presentations, attendees will be encouraged to enjoy some refreshments and interact with hands-on displays featuring illusions, recreational mathematics, magic, puzzles, and more. The evening will culminate with a performance by magician ; mentalist, Spidey, in the Student Union Auditorium!

Abstract. The hardest logic puzzle ever was introduced by philosopher George Boolos in 1996. We are to imagine three gods: one who always makes true statements, one who only makes false statements, and one who randomly answers true or false at his whim. The gods will answer any yes/no question that is put to them, but they will answer in their own language, in which the words for yes and no are da and ja, in some order. Sadly, you do not now which word means what. Your task is to determine who is who in just three questions. The puzzle has spawned a veritable industry of journal articles, in which authors present ever more ingenious solutions, and ever more fiendishly difficult variations. We will discuss the various approaches to this puzzle and its variations. Along the way we will consider aspects of the history of logic, focusing especially on puzzle masters like Lewis Carroll and Raymond Smullyan.
Speaker Bio.Jason Rosenhouse received his PhD in mathematics from Dartmouth College in 2000, specializing in algebraic graph theory. Currently he is a professor of mathematics at James Madison University, in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He is the author or editor of seven books including The Monty Hall Problem: The Remarkable Story of Math’s Most Contentious Brainteaser, and Among the Creationists: Dispatches from the Anti-Evolutionary Front Line, both published by Oxford University Press. With Laura Taalman he is the author of Taking Sudoku Seriously: The Math Behind the World’s Most Popular Pencil Puzzle, which received the 2012 PROSE award from the Association of American publishers for the best popular math or science book of the year. When not doing math he enjoys playing chess, cooking, and reading locked-room mysteries.
