During 2020, while the world shut down, creativity flourished.
Choral groups sang over Zoom, friends attended virtual cocktail hours, and mathematicians and artists spent their lockdown hours knitting, painting, and constructing wonders. In this talk, I’ll show and discuss pieces by QED Arts (the collaborative team of myself and mathematical artist Bronna Butler) and talk about Mathemalchemy, a large multimedia art installation (currently on display at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC) that celebrates the creativity and beauty of mathematics.
Jessica K. Sklar (@JessicaKSklar) is a professor of mathematics and the current mathematics chair at Pacific Lutheran University. Her passions include math and art, math and pop culture, recreational math (the math of games and puzzles), and abstract algebra. She co-edited the book Mathematics and Popular Culture (McFarland, 2012) with Elizabeth S. Sklar, and is a member of the Mathemalchemy team, creating a large multimedia art installation that celebrates the creativity and beauty of mathematics. She and artist Bronna Butler together make up QED Arts, a mathematical art collaborative.

The Humour of MathematicsWe look at the role that humour plays in the teaching and understanding of mathematics, with hilariously funny illustrations and examples. The aim is to show how humour humanises the subject, makes it more enjoyable, and show that mathematicians are prepared to laugh at themselves and their subject. On a more serious level, we examine structural relations between humour and mathematics, for example, a comparison between the theorem and the joke, and a look at people who had a foot in both camps, such as Lewis Carroll, Stephen Leacock and Tom Lehrer.
Two of his main interests are mathematics and humour and in February 2022 Less Serious Books, an imprint of Logic Press in Ireland, has published his magnum opus Comic Sections Plus, the book of mathematical jokes, humour, wit and wisdom. Des MacHale is interested in puzzles of all kinds, but especially mathematical and logical, and he is also interested in words, music, photography, book collecting, mineral and fossil collecting, broadcasting, philosophy, religion, health education and humour analysis. He and his wife Anne of nearly fifty years live in Cork and they have five wonderful children and three even more wonderful grandchildren.

Remembering Tom Rodgers and the birth of the Gathering for Gardner
In January 1993, a group of friends of Martin Gardner gathered at the Marriott hotel in downtown Atlanta for an exhibition of puzzles, present talks at local schools, and convene among themselves about magic, puzzles, math and all the topics Martin wrote about. The puzzle exhibition was held at the Atlanta International Museum of Art and Design from January 14 to April 9, 1993, and featured puzzles created by legendary puzzle makers including Nob Yoshigahara, Harry Eng, Stewart Coffin, and Rick Irby, who were all present for the opening of the exhibit and the conference. The event was covered by CNN and other media. This group of Martin’s friends, and the exhibition and all the accompanying events was the brainchild of, and all organized by Thomas Malin Rodgers, and was the birth of the Gathering for Gardner. Join Mark Setteducati for a talk about Tom and memories of that first Gathering, along with rare photos and videos of Tom, the exhibition, and his creation – The Gathering for Gardner.Mark Setteducati is a co-founder and past President of the Gathering for Gardner. He is a Magician and inventor of games, puzzles and magic, with over 50 of his creations marketed by companies worldwide. He is the author of “The Magic Show”, an interactive book that performs magic. In 2014, the Academy of Magical Arts awarded him a Creative Fellowship and lifetime membership to the Magic Castle, Hollywood, California.

Re-Visioning Maths
In my experience, many people, especially women are scared of maths or were poorly taught, I love the way it underpins everything in the world and part of my mission is to make maths accessible to people through visual means.
The presentation will cover the development of my Mathematical Magic Colouring System, which runs through many strands of my work. Plus some of my explorations with Optical illusions, Spiral grids, Fabric Origami Windmills & Pinwheels, Multiview/Polymorph sculptures, Paper cuts/Kirigami, Knots, Rings & Things, Jacob’s Ladder, plaiting/3D structures, Mani-fold Maths shape/book project, and more…
Louise Mabbs has been called a ‘visual mathematician’. In over 40+ years of working with textiles she has explored many aspects of design and technique. Her work is colourful and eclectic ranging from tight geometric patchworks to tactile organic embroidered subjects. After an Art Foundation course in at Derby Lonsdale College of Higher Education (1981-2), she did a degree in Constructed Textiles at Winchester School of Art (1982-5) specialising in weaving and double cloth, where she discovered the politics and design possibilities of Art Quilts. She returned to Derbyshire to set up a studio and shop, making commissions and teaching many textile skills and began to rediscover her love of mathematical design. Following studios in Manchester, London and Brighton, she recently moved to Newcastle. She has written for many publications and co-wrote a book on Fabric Origami in 2006 The Quilter’s Guide to Twists & Tucks (Anova, UK) /Origami Quilts (Martingale, USA) and is working on several other themes. She has taught and lectured nationally and internationally, in Adult Education, privately, and at many Maths and Origami conferences, including Bridges 2006 & 10, 7OSME, MathsJam plus a vast variety of textile events or exhibitions. Louise is open to commissions and collaborations and would love to work within academic research and enquiry. She is particularly interested in synaesthesia, how we see colour and optical effects and is passionate about making mathematical ideas easy for the general public to understand through art.

Raymond Merrill Smullyan (1919-2017) was an American mathematician, magician, pianist, logician, Taoist, philosopher, and amateur astronomer.
He was a brilliant logician, having significantly contributed for a better understanding of Gödel’s theorem. Smullyan, a close friend of Martin Gardner, was one of the most relevant recreational mathematicians that ever lived, having published many masterpieces on recreational logic. Books like «What is the name of this book?», «The chess mysteries of the Arabian knights», and «The riddle of Scheherazade» are pearls in this field. The Island of Knights and Knaves and chessboards where detectives and kings solve problems using retrograde analysis are two magic realms of pure creativity. In this talk, we will show some examples of his outstanding recreational work.

Dividing the circle, a problem for both mathematicians and artists
The problem of dividing the circle in equal parts has accompanied the history of mathematics, with contributions ranging from Euclid to Gauss. The problem was also addressed by artists such as Dürer, with different motivations and points of view. In this talk we will briefly overview a few of these contributions, and see how some 20th century artwork has even taken this topic as one of its central themes.
Pedro Freitas has a PhD in mathematics, is Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Sciences at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and a member of the Interuniversity Center for the History and Philosophy of Sciences. His teaching and research are mainly related to the history of mathematics, recreational mathematics and relations between mathematics and art – in particular, he has been collaborating for some years in the study of the geometric work of Almada Negreiros. He is also involved in mathematical outreach.

Mining the Soma Cube for Gems: Isomorphic Subgraphs Reveal Equivalence Classes
Soma cubes are an example of a dissection puzzle, where an object is broken down into pieces, which must then be reassembled to form either the original shape or some new design. In this paper, we present some interesting discoveries regarding the Soma Cube. Equivalence classes form aesthetically pleasing shapes in the solution set of the puzzle. These gems are identified by subgraph isomorphisms using SNAP!/Edgy, a simple block-based computer programming language. Our preliminary findings offer several opportunities for researchers from middle school to undergraduate to utilize graphs, group theory, topology, and computer science to discover connections between computation and geometric patterns.
Edward Vogel is a child of the 60s and a US Navy veteran, where he lived out his snide remark “no, an engineer on a boat” to a doubtful high school math teacher. Largely self educated in electrical engineering and mathematics he lives in Minneapolis working in medical device R&D by day and STEM/Arts education nights and weekends.

Celebration of Mind 2021
honoring Martin Gardner
October 23-24, 2021,
at Ye Olde Gamery
Maryland Renaissance Festival
Martin Gardner was one of the most beloved personalities in the areas of recreational mathematics, magic, and puzzles. The influence of his work is immeasurable.
He was the author of more than 65 books and countless articles, ranging over the fields of science, mathematics, philosophy, literature, and conjuring. His best-selling book was The Annotated Alice, an analysis of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, followed by a sequel, More Annotated Alice. He wrote two novels—The Flight of Peter Fromm and Visitors from Oz. His Scientific American columns are collected in fifteen volumes. No-Sided Professors is a collection of his short fiction.
Martin inspired and enlightened three generations of readers with the delights of mathematical recreations, the amazing phenomena of numbers, magic, and puzzles, the play of ideas. It was Martin’s article on pentominoes in 1957 that popularized this set of shapes and led, through an amazing series of events, to the founding of Kadon Enterprises, Inc. We hold him and his life’s work in a very special place of reverence.
We were honored when Martin offered us the opportunity to design and produce the two games he had created—The Game of Solomon and Lewis Carroll’s Chess Wordgame, the latter based on a note in Lewis Carroll’s diaries.
Martin Gardner was born October 21, 1914, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the son of a geologist and oil producer. He graduated at the University of Chicago in 1936 with a major in philosophy. He lived and wrote for many years in New York. He and his wife, Charlotte, eventually moved to the western mountains of North Carolina, where Kate had the honor and pleasure of visiting them. Martin returned to Norman, Oklahoma, in 2004, his 90th year. He continued to write until his death on May 22, 2010, at the age of 95. There is an excellent entry about Martin on the Wikiverse website, part of Wikipedia.
A biennial celebration of Martin Gardner’s life and work has been held in Atlanta, Georgia, since 1994, founded by Tom Rodgers, a businessman and puzzle collector. Martin himself attended the first gathering. Since then, the Gathering for Gardner (G4G) continues to be an invitation-only get-together for mathematicians, magicians, and puzzlers who enjoy sharing their work and play inspired by Martin’s writings.
Tom Rodgers, before his untimely death, established the Gathering for Gardner Foundation (http://gathering4gardner.org/about/) as a central organization for continuing these biennial events and for the annual Celebration of Mind (http://celebrationofmind.org/celebration-of-mind/) birthday tributes for Martin held every October 21 in dozens of countries. Martin’s memory and inspiration live on.
We continue to commemorate his life and his achievements with annual Celebration of Mind themes of our own at Ye Olde Gamery, our pavilion at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. The Festival runs for nine weekends, and its final weekend is on or around Martin’s birthday.
