There seems to be no end to the mathemagical things one can explore with a simple deck of cards, from algebra and combinatorics to probability and statistics. In this talk, Colm Mulcahy will explore how card tricks provide an entertaining and often surprising forum for mathematics. The talk will include demonstrations, and will explore mostly new principles in mathemagic and their applications to card tricks.

Kids ages 8 and up, and grown-ups who are kids at heart, will enjoy this afternoon filled with hands-on math activities. This year’s event takes place during Global Math Week! The event honors the life and work of Martin Gardner, former Scientific American columnist who inspired a generation of mathematicians and recreational math enthusiasts. In the spirit of Martin Gardner’s love of Alice in Wonderland and with Halloween around the corner, come “down the rabbit hole” and explore with us! This event is free and open to the public! Questions? Contact Jennifer Murawski at jmurawski@msri.org. Registration is requested, but not required.

In the sequence of the almost regular meetings at the Com Calma for the Noite de Magia Com Calma the cultural association opens its doors yet again for a night of ilusionism and magic.
This time we’ll have a joined show by artists Adrien Lochon and Tiago Hirth. After which we’ll have a joined discussion and exchange on the arts of magic and celebration of Martin Gardner’s Birthday.
Synopse: Two magicians sit at a table meeting in a cellar. They change tales and stories that both know. The mystic, the fables the legends of their heroes are palpable and ever present. With a jar, a deck, a notebook they visit several principles of magic. They defy themselves and who watches for the taste of fun and amazement on its own.

Event Details
The idea to run a CoM event at GSU comes from the understanding and awareness of the need to popularize math. The aim of this project is to reach out to audiences who in principle reject math. Following the legacy of Gardner, we want to prove to them that math can be fun; in fact, math is fun. Magic tricks, puzzle, brainteasers, challenges, or even music shows can be used to kindle interest in math. Every magic tricks poses a problem and that is: how did the magician do it? That sense of awe before the magic trick can be transmuted into mathematical curiosity, and Martin Gardner left us many examples of how to achieve this.
