Our 35rd annual computer graphics film show features the latest and greatest computer animations, direct from the ACM SIGGRAPH conference held this past summer in Anaheim CA. Many of the video shorts from prior SIGGRAPH shows, and their animators, have gone on to win Oscars! Our speaker this year is Prof.Adam Finkelstein of Princeton University.
We will be co-celebrating Martin Gardner’s 100th birthday by also hosting a Celebration of Mind party
as part of our meeting. Gardner (1914-2010) was the editor of the Mathematical Games column of Scientific American from 1956-1981. This talk, by Dr. Dennis Mancl of Alcatel-Lucent, will feature the 75th anniversary of the invention of flexagons (invented in 1939 by Arthur Stone math grad student at Princeton). Also discussed will be magic squares, as it is the 500th anniversary of the famous Albrecht Di¼rer woodcut containing a magic square (Melencolia I). Gardner puzzles related to these topics will be shown.

At our pavilion, people visit and play with puzzles and games, including the games Martin Gardner invented: “The Game of Solomon” and “Lewis Carroll’s Chess Wordgame”. Visitors will hear about recreational mathematics, embodied in our grand display of beautiful puzzles we’ve designed and made over the last 35 years. They will hear the story of how Martin inspired Kate to develop this product line, starting with pentominoes. With all purchases they will also receive a special puzzle souvenir (based on the number 100) and a page of explanation about the Celebration of Mind including links to your website.
We’ll have the Celebration of Mind for both days of the Renaissance Festival season’s ninth and last weekend, Oct. 18-19, 2014. The festival is open from 10AM to 7PM. Because of the 16th century format, only visitors can bring video cameras. We will try discreetly to get some photos, as in previous years.
This Celebration is now a tradition for us for the closing weekend. We did it also in 2012 and 2013. See our write-ups here:

Puzzah! is hosting “Hand Me A Puzzle” to commemorate G4G: Celebration of Mind 2014.
The Martin Gardner Celebration of Mind is an annual global event held on or around October 21st. We invite you to join us in celebrating the legacy of Martin Gardner through the enjoyment of Puzzles, Magic and Recreational Math.
Martin Gardner (21 Oct 1914 22 May 2010) had no formal education in mathematics but had an enormous influence on the subject. His writings exhibit an extraordinary ability to convey the essence of many mathematically sophisticated topics to a very wide audience. In the words first uttered by mathematician Richard K. Guy, Gardner has brought more mathematics, to more millions, than anyone else.
Puzzah! will be providing light snacks and refreshments on the day of this free drop-in event. We are in the heart of beautiful LoDo right in downtown Denver (20 seconds away from 16th St Mall!) and this event is suitable for families with children.
NOTE: Some of these puzzle parts will be small and may be a choking hazard for children under 6 years old. Please be mindful of this if you are bringing small children with you.

As a science writer who grew up reading Martin Gardner’s books and as founder of the Good Thinking Society, I will be trying to visit as many local schools as I can on the centenary of Martin’s birth. There are 9 state schools in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and already more than half (5!) have signed up. If the other 4 want to be involved, then I will do my best to fit them in without breaking any speed limits. I will be talking about Martin’s legacy in relation to science, skepticism and, of course, mathematics. I will try to deliver a different talk at each school.

As a group of students from Robert College (Turkey/Istanbul) we want to start up a tradition of organizing events on October 21. and the week before. For the first time this year, we have been putting puzzles made by Martin Gardner on to our school monitors in the school area. If people can find the solutions they send the answer to garmar.100@robcol.k12.tr mail address. On the day October 21. there will be tables and different types of organizations for the students and staff. There will be card tricks, games that can be played up to multiple people, brownies and hexaflexagons with stories on them. We will video tape the activities and put on to our website attached below. We try to get as many people’s attention to this special event and want Robert College to be a part of Martin Gardner days in the future.

Event Details
Martin Gardner was a titan in the fields of math, magic, science, puzzles, games, skepticism, optical illusions and was an avid fan of Alice in Wonderland and Sherlock Holmes. Twenty- plus years ago, to honor Martin, a group of magicians, scientists, gamesters, puzzlers, magicians, skeptics and fans of Alice in Wonderland hosted a gathering in which each of these domains was celebrated and explored. This bi-annual conference, The Gathering for Gardner, meets in Atlanta GA. http://gathering4gardner.org
This year is Martin Gardner’s 100th birthday! G4G’s Celebration of Mind Committee, which formed after Martin’s passing in 2010, encourages everyone to hold an event or party to celebrate Martin’s legacy and continue his pursuit of a playful and fun approach to math, science, art, magic, puzzles, and all of his other interests.
We will be hosting a Celebration of Mind event on October 21, 2014 at the home of Brad Henderson, in Round Rock, TX. All people who share the interests of Gardner are welcome to attend, and participation is highly encouraged. Please bring something to show, perform, or discuss. Magic tricks, con games, puzzles and origami are all welcome – as are talks on mathematics, science, skepticism, and Alice in Wonderland. You can bring things to display and showcase, or get up in front of the group and dazzle us with your insights.
The event will be being at 7:00 pm with an hour of drinks, snacks and a viewing of items brought for display. (Soft drinks and water to be provided. BYOB welcome) The presentations will begin at approximately 8:00. If you would like to attend and/or present, please contact Roger Gorss at (254) 282-4305 or email roger.a.gorss.civ@mail.mil. (or RSVP via facebook with presentational topic). While there is no set time limit on presentations, we ask that all talks be concise and direct in effort to allow as many people as possible to share their experiences and expertise. (duration TBD)
PS, if you have a folding chair, please bring it. Depending on attendance we might need a few extra seats.
Venue: 1907 West Pflugerville Parkway, Round Rock, TX 78664 (the venue is a home In the city of Pflugerville, but the address is ROUND ROCK.)

Paper folding was what brought Martin Gardner back to math. Our event will focus on paper folding, especially the kinds of paper folding that Martin liked. This event will be for Seattle public elementary school children and their families. Each meeting will last for one hour and 45 minutes. A Friday October 24th event will be held at the Seattle Public Library Greenwood Branch at 4 PM; a Monday October 27th event will be held at the Northeast Branch at 6 PM. (Note that these will not appear on the library’s online schedule, which only includes events sponsored by the library itself.)
About the sponsoring group: We started the Seattle Public School STEM Paper Folding program nine years ago with the aim of addressing four aspects of early science, math and engineering education, namely, ability, interest, confidence and plans. Over time we have added a number of other aims, e.g., looking at things deeply; failing happily and constructively; asking one’s own questions; using strategies for creativity. By some measures, our program is now the largest such program in the United States. It has been very popular with teachers, students and parents. One of our teachers is once again a finalist for the national presidential award in mathematics teaching.

Although I was sad to hear of Nelson’s death, when I read this book, my spirits were immediately lifted and I was soon chuckling at his penetrating wit, and overawed at the depth and breadth of his erudition.”Ken Lever (profoundly influenced by Nelson’s approach to nonlinear systems analysis)

A talk by Dr. Colm Mulcahy:
Martin Gardner, The Best Friend Mathematics Ever Had, was best known for his 300
“Mathematical Games” columns in Scientific American, in which he introduced
thousands of budding mathematicians to elegant problems and magical items which
still lead to “Aha ” moments today. He sometimes asked simple questions that
inspired serious research, and some of those questions remain unanswered today.
In his centennial year we’ll survey what he achieved and the legacy he leaves
behind.

Event Details
Martin Gardner friend and scholar Colm Mulcahy will be joining members of the National Capital Area Skeptics at our monthly Drinking Skeptically event. This is an informal, unstructured gathering of proponents of science and critical thinking. We meet at The Front Page, 4201 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA (near the Ballston Metro) in the atrium behind the restaurant. If you have trouble finding us, tell one of the staff people you are looking for the skeptics. We start to show up at 7:00 pm and have no fixed end time (though most of us have to work in the morning).
“Drinking Skeptically is an informal social event designed to promote fellowship and networking among skeptics, critical thinkers, and like-minded individuals. It provides an opportunity for skeptics to talk, share ideas (and yes, drink) in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. We discuss the issues of the day and whatever else is on our minds. But most of all, we have fun while promoting skepticism, science, and rationality. Don’t drink? Don’t let that stop you from joining us! Some of the world’s most famous skeptics are teetotalers, and we are happy to have you! Remember that drinking skeptically means drinking responsibly. If there’s one thing science has taught us, it’s the effects of alcohol on the human body.
For additional information about the nation-wide Drinking Skeptically movement, see drinkingskeptically.org “
